What is FCVS, and do you actually need it?

The Federation Credentials Verification Service (FCVS) is run by the Federation of State Medical Boards. It creates a permanent, primary-source-verified profile of your core credentials — your medical education, postgraduate training, examination history, and identity — that boards can rely on instead of re-verifying everything from scratch.

The value is reuse. Building your FCVS profile takes time up front, but once it exists, future license applications can point to it rather than re-triggering slow verifications with your medical school and residency programs. For physicians who plan to license in several states over their career, that up-front cost pays off quickly.

Some boards require FCVS; many strongly prefer it; a few don't use it at all. Whether it's worth doing first depends on which states you're targeting and how many licenses you expect to need over time.
